Querencias 22th: Conexiones con la tierra (extended deadline for abstract submission)

The Spanish and Portuguese Graduate Student Association (SPGSA) at the University of New Mexico is announcing the annual conference Querencias . This meeting aims to explore the relationship between land and discourse. How are ideologies distributed across space? How are language, discourse, and land connected? How do symbolic spaces and social dynamics intersect? Querencias 22: Conexiones con la tierra will explore these questions as well as the intersections of language, discourse, culture, and conceptualizations of space within the Hispanic and Lusophone world.            We welcome abstracts for presentations and themed panels in English, Portuguese, or Spanish from these interdisciplinary fields of study: Hispanic and Lusophone literatures and cultural studies, Hispanic and Lusophone linguistics, and Southwest and Latin American studies. Research within these fields is encouraged but not limited to the following topics: Eco-literature and criticism, postcolonialism, contemporary

  Dr.  Eliseo “Cheo” Torres & Mario del Ángel Guevara (University of New Mexico)   Biography: Eliseo “Cheo” Torres has wide experience in Mexican folk tradition, especially the ancient art of curanderismo , a Mexican folk healing. He lectures regularly lectures at the University of New Mexico and gives presentations on the history and lore of curanderismo to audiences ranging from scholars and students of Latin American culture to people hoping to become knowledgeable about alternative and traditional medicine, including lay people and medical professionals alike. He has published Curandero: A Life in Mexican Folk Healing, and Healing with Herbs and Rituals: A Mexican Tradition by the University of New Mexico Press and Kendall Hunt Publishing Company. Biography: Mario Guevara is originally from Monterrey, Mexico. His research interests focus on Traditional medicine of Mexico and the Southwest. His work also includes translating and interpreting Spanish-English for the D
